How to Install a GeneratePress Child Theme (Step by Step Guide)
You've bought a GeneratePress child theme - now what?
Installing a child theme in WordPress takes less than 5 minutes. This guide walks you through it step by step, even if you've never done it before.
What You'll Need Before Starting
That's it. No coding. No FTP.
Step 1: Install GeneratePress (Parent Theme) First
Before you install any child theme, the parent theme must already be installed - even if it's not active. The child theme won't work without it.
- Go to WordPress Admin → Appearance → Themes
- Click Add New
- Search for "GeneratePress"
- Click Install (don't activate it yet - or you can, doesn't matter)
If you already have GeneratePress installed, skip this step.
Step 2: Upload Your Child Theme ZIP
- Go to WordPress Admin → Appearance → Themes
- Click Add New
- Click Upload Theme
- Click Choose File and select the ZIP file you downloaded from DKTheme
- Click Install Now
WordPress will upload and install the child theme automatically.
Step 3: Activate the Child Theme
After installation, you'll see an "Activate" button. Click it.
Your child theme is now active. The parent theme (GeneratePress) runs in the background automatically - you don't need to switch between them.
Step 4: Import the Demo Content (If Included)
Most DKTheme child themes include a demo XML file or a one-click importer that sets up the homepage, widgets, and menus exactly like the preview.
To import:
- Install the plugin "One Click Demo Import" or "WordPress Importer"
- Go to Appearance → Import Demo Data (if the theme has built-in importer)
- Click Import and wait 1–2 minutes
After import, your site should look like the live preview.
Step 5: Set Your Homepage
If the homepage looks blank after activation:
- Go to Settings → Reading
- Set "Your homepage displays" to A static page
- Select the page named "Home" or "Homepage" from the dropdown
- Save changes
Common Issues & Fixes
| Problem | Fix | |---|---| | Child theme shows unstyled/plain text | GeneratePress parent theme not installed - install it first | | Homepage looks blank | Set static homepage in Settings → Reading | | Demo import failed | Try importing the XML manually via Tools → Import | | Widgets not showing | Set up widget areas in Appearance → Widgets |
